Volunteer
House Captain
House Captains are responsible for the technical aspect of the on-site home repairs undertaken by their teams. They must have sufficient technical skills and resources to know what can be done, what cannot be done, and what should not be attempted.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to identifying materials, supplies and skilled labor needed for the workday; recruiting skilled labor and donated supplies for their project whenever possible; ensuring their teams do not begin repairs that they do not have the resources or time to complete; working with their Area Director to stay within budget and project guidelines; working with their Ambassador; appointing a safety person and maintaining a safe work environment for everyone; providing the technical advise and skill volunteers need to complete the job; scheduling and organizing team resources to accomplish the work; developing a workflow plan for each project and coordinating prior to work day; supervising and managing during CIA work day; completing the scope of work and evaluating the project after the work is complete.
House Captains should not do any of the actual work if possible. They are there to supervise and keep the volunteers focused on the mission. While CIA is a one day activity for most team members, House Captains should assume they will be involved periodically over a several month period, and that depending on the scope of work their team undertakes, they may have significant time involvement in the days before and after the CIA work day. Only through effective, dedicated House Captains, Ambassadors and Area Directors can CIA hope to achieve its goals of providing warmth, safety and independence to our homeowners and their families.
